Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) receives Android 5.0 Lollipop update

Whoa! Samsung just started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop (LRX21T) update to the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F). This is the first time the Korean giant has delivered a major Android software upgrade in such a short period of time, only 31 days – Google dropped final Lollipop code to AOSP on November 4th. Currently, the new software upgrade is only available in Poland, however, it should start appearing in other European countries shortly. As of this moment, we aren’t aware of an exact Lollipop release date for the U.S. Galaxy S5 variants because of the usual carrier certification, which usually slows down the roll-out process.

Android 5.0 Lollipop brings in a plethora of features and enhancements to the Galaxy S5, the biggest change being the user interface. With Lollipop, Google introduced Material Design which makes UI elements alive and natural to touch; in simpler words, every UI element has an animation, and it looks amazing! Material Design brought new design guidelines, which required Samsung to develop all of its proprietary system applications from scratch, and they now look much, much better than before – thanks, Google! Samsung’s own applications now come with coloured status bar, new font, and a material-design inspired look. Also, Samsung has finally ditched the good old blue theme, which it had been using since the Galaxy S2, for a brand new white dye.

In terms of features, Android 5.0 brings a brand new lockscreen with notifications support, tap & go, priority mode, heads-up notifications, Smart Lock, MirrorLink, and more. Moreover, Samsung has built in a handy clipboard tool which keeps a history of your screenshots and copied text, the Korean giant has ported Galaxy Note 4′s fingerprint lock screen to the Galaxy S5, and has also updated the fingerprint driver itself, which has drastically improved fingerprint recognition.

Performance-wise, this is the most lag-free and speedy software Samsung has developed for a smartphone to date, period. This mainly could be due to the new ART runtime, or Samsung actually did optimise its software for the first time ever. Whatever it is, it’s fast, and we only care about it being just that.

To update your Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) to Android 5.0 Lollipop, connect your device to your computer and use Samsung Kies or simply use Samsung’s FOTA (firmware-over-the-air) service. To download and install the firmware via OTA, go to Settings > System > About Device > Software update > Update.

All new Android 5.0 Lollipop firmwares for the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) are available for download on our Firmware Portal as well. You can use our Firmware Portal to manually update your device, if for some reason you can’t officially update your device via Samsung Kies or via OTA as you might be running a custom ROM or if your country has not yet received the Lollipop update.

Here’s how Android 5.0 Lollipop will look on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Yesterday, we released exclusive screenshots showcasing the Android 5.0 Lollipop build running on the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. Now, we bring you some exclusive screenshots from an early build of Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 4. As you can see in the images, many applications and UI elements have been updated with Google’s new ‘Material Design’ approach. The notifications pull down menu is now translucent, but unlike the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5, the placement of the S Finder icon hasn’t been changed yet. This could change by the time Samsung releases the final build of the Android 5.0 ROM for the Galaxy Note 4. The settings menu now features side scrollable tabs for different sections such as quick settings, connections, device settings, and more. There’s now an on-screen back button in the settings sub-menus. All the native applications such as messages, dialler, calendar, email, task manager, and clock have been updated with Material design. You could also notice shortcuts for slow-motion and fast time video (time lapse videos) modes in the camera app.

As of now, we don’t know the tentative date for the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Galaxy Note 4, but we will keep you updated as and when we receive information from our reliable sources. Previously, we have released screenshots and videos of the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy Note 3, and the Galaxy S4 GPe running Android 5.0 Lollipop builds.

Samsung Galaxy A3 shows up in hands-on video

The Galaxy A3 is yet to go up for sale anywhere, but an early hands-on video of the device has showed up online courtesy of HDBlog. It’s a pretty comprehensive hands-on for a device that isn’t officially available yet – we get see the phone in general operation, get a look at its design from all angles, and even get a demo of the new themes feature that Samsung has introduced with the Galaxy A3 and A5. The phone comes with a couple of pre-loaded themes such as Samsung Basic, Natural and Craft, and basically change things like homescreen icons, wallpaper and color tone.

Overall, the Galaxy A3 looks like a better than average budget smartphone that should help Samsung somewhat compete with lower-priced phones from the competition, with the all-metal build an important feature separating it from the pack. Samsung releases a beautiful 4K video of all the seasons captured using the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung has released a new video showcasing the video recording capabilities of their latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 4. This video is a compilation of various 4K videos captured using the 16-megapixel camera on the Galaxy Note 4. Four Instagrammers, Garry Norris, Zach Glassman, Sam Horine, and Bethany Marie, used the Galaxy Note 4 and a drone to capture all four seasons around the globe using a drone. The video includes beautiful scenes from New South Wales (Australia) during the spring, Exuma (Bahamas) during the summer, New York (US) during the autumn, and British Columbia (Canada) during the winter. The whole video carefully showcases the imaging capabilities of the Galaxy Note 4, thanks to its 16-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation and 4K video recording abilities.

LG could finally deliver a G Flex 2 at CES in January

LG is expected to finally launch a second-generation G Flex at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, more than a year after the original brought curved smartphone displays to the masses. The device will be a “major upgrade” over its predecessor, sources claim, and it will maintain the self-healing coating the G Flexhas become famous for.

The original G Flex made its debut last October, and it was one of the first smartphones to deliver a curved display. That was combined with cutting-edge specifications and unique features, and the device was praised for its flexibility, performance, and of course, its self-healing back panel. About the only thing consumers didn’t like was its steep price tag.

Fast forward more than 12 months later and we’re still waiting for another G Flexsmartphone, but according to sources for Android Authority, the handset will finally show its face at CES in Las Vegas this coming January.

“Details about the new device are scarce for now,” the report says, “but according to persons close to the matter, the G Flex 2 will be a “major upgrade” over its predecessor.” It’s thought the device will deliver a sharper display with a 1080p resolution, and likely the latest processor from Qualcomm and LG’s impressive laser auto-focus camera technology.

CES kicks off on January 6, and it’s the biggest consumer electronics show of the year. In addition to the G Flex 2, then, you can expect to see many more smartphones, tablets, PCs, TVs, and other gadgets.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 gets a stability-oriented update

Following a firmware update focused on improving battery life,Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owners are now treated with another one targeting performance and stability. Users in Germany and Greece are reporting their smartphones are prompted to install the latest Galaxy Note 4 firmware with build number N910FXXU1ANK4, which weighs 137MB.

The update is built on November 17 and Samsung hasn't revealed more details regarding the effects of the update besides that it improves the overall performance. The underlying Android version is still 4.4.4 KitKat.

If you haven't received the update, it should be rolling out gradually over the course of the upcoming days so fret not.

Final Preview: Android 5.0 Lollipop on Samsung Galaxy S5

Yesterday, we brought you an exclusive preview of the latest test build of Android 5.0 Lollipop running on the Galaxy S4, and now we’re back with yet another preview, this time for the Galaxy S5, also running on a newer build of Lollipop. Compared to the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S5′s new Lollipop build hasn’t brought too many changes, except for new icons in Toolbox, which allows quick access to a few functions from anywhere on the phone. However, what’s noticeable on the new build is the performance – the phone feels speedier and smoother now, and even the gallery app, which is generally slow on all Samsung devices, seems to be more optimized.

Again, we aren’t releasing the Lollipop firmware given its not the final version and has bugs. However, you can check out the latest build in action in the video below, and also check out some screenshots right after the video.
