Apple didn’t give the iPhone 6 camera a big update this cycle, but next year could be a revolutionary leap forward for iPhotographers if Apple upgrades to the new sensor its camera supplier just unveiled.
Sony announced today that its
Exmor RS IMX230 camera sensor will be ready to ship in April 2015, and along with packing a 21MP CMOS sensor, it could bring DSLR-quality auto-focusing and 4K video recording to your next iPhone.

The new Sony IMX230 sensor comes with higher image quality and functionality, and will be the first smartphone camera sensor with both an onboard image plane phase detection AF signal processing function and HDR imaging that can capture 21MP HDR photos and HDR 4K video.
The IM230 will be available early enough to be included in the iPhone 6s, but it only shoots video at 120FPS, while the new iPhones boast super-slo 240FPS.
Apple consistently chooses lower megapixel count in favor of higher image quality, but Sony is planning to release a smaller 16MP IMX240 sensor that could be perfect for Apple, if it’s ready in time next year.
